Volkswagen Unveils New Diesel Motor to Replace 2.0L TDI

Volkswagen has announced that a new diesel engine is coming to the 2015 Passat, Golf, Jetta and Beetle, to replace the current 2.0-liter diesel offering.

While the engines share bore spacing, VW says that this new engine has been designed to reduce emissions, while providing more power. The new motor, designated EA288, makes 10 more horsepower than the previous diesel, and is rated at 150 hp and 236 lb-ft of torque. It is a turbocharged, common-rail, direct-injection four-cylinder.

To help improve emissions, a new exhaust gas recirculation system has been installed, the water-cooled intercooler and exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve have been integrated with the intake manifold and the exhaust after-treatment components have been moved closer to the engine by combining the diesel particulate filter (DPF) with the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) catalyst.

To decrease friction in the motor, VW has added new camshaft and balancer shaft bearings, new piston rings, and a two-stage oil pump with volumetric flow regulation.

This new motor will debut in the 2015 Jetta, Passat, Golf and Beetle, which will all be available in dealerships by the second half of 2014. Eventually, this new motor will replace every 2.0-liter TDI Clean Diesel fitted in an Audi or Volkswagen TDI Clean Diesel model.
