Steering Wheel, Gas Pedal to Disappear by 2035: Survey
The future of the automobile looks very different from what we know today, and one survey predicts that even the steering wheel will be gone by 2035.
Most respondents agree that rearview mirrors, horns, and emergency brakes will be gone from cars by 2030, while the steering wheels and gas/brake pedals will be killed off by 2035. This means that the majority of the responders believe that cars will be fully autonomous in just over two decades.
The Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) polled 200 researchers, academicians, practitioners, university students, society members, and government agencies on which mass-produced automotive feature would be eliminated from cars of the future.

The poll also asked the participants to identify the major barriers blocking autonomous vehicles from coming to the market. They identified legal liability, policymakers and consumer acceptance as the top three barriers, while cost, infrastructure, and technology were identified as less worrying barriers.
