FIA WEC Getting Rid of Grid Girls

Don’t expect to see umbrella girls at World Endurance Championship races in the near future.

The racing series, which includes the famous Le Mans 24 Hours, is getting rid of grid girls starting with the upcoming Silverstone race next week. WEC chief executive Gerard Neveu spoke about the change after a presentation on the Silverstone race saying, “For me that is the past. The condition of women is a little different now.”

The change is a move towards seeking more equality and less sexism in a male-dominated sport, but it’s probably worth noting that in same race series, female racers have umbrella men. Expect to see the race cars line up diagonally opposite the pit wall and grandstand when the WEC kicks off at Silverstone on April 12.
