Is Your Car Affected by the Airbag Recall?

The single largest recall in North America, 34 million vehicles use faulty airbags manufactured by Japanese parts supplier Takata. But is your car one of them?

By brand, the potentially flawed cars are from BMW, Chrysler, Daimler Trucks, Ford, General Motors, Honda, Mazda, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Subaru and Toyota. Many of these companies have already announced recalls for millions of vehicles over the issue, but more will surely be added thanks to this new announcement.

Since the recall is so massive and widespread, it will likely take some time before every automaker pinpoints every vehicle that is affected. For now, the best way to find out if your personal car is affected is by heading over to NHTSA’s VIN search site, which will lookup any outstanding recalls on your vehicle.

The issue is with the propellant in the airbag inflator. It can change chemical makeup over time, causing it to explode with too much force, sending shrapnel flying at the vehicle’s occupants. At least six deaths have been blamed on the issue along with more than 100 injuries.

The exact root cause of the issue is still unknown, though external investigations suggest that moisture can seep in to the inflator over time, causing degradation of the propellant.

NHTSA says that the entire recall process will likely take years to complete and that cars in areas seen as high-risk will be prioritized so that the most dangerous vehicles will be fixed first. High risk areas are generally those with high humidity levels. NHTSA says it will oversee testing of the replacement inflators to make sure they are safe.

Below, you can find two lists. The first list shows all of the vehicles that have been added to the recall, while the second list is from November 2014, and shows which vehicles were initially affected. Many of the vehicles are the same on both lists, as more models were added on from new regions in the expended recall announcement.
