Tesla Recalls Charging Adapters for Overheating Issue

Tesla has issued a voluntary recall for 7,000 charger adapters which can overheat and melt.

The American automaker says that the adapters in question, the NEMA 14-30, are manufactured by an outside supplier and have not been sold for six months now.

Two different customers reported cases of overheating which caused the plastic on the adapter itself to melt. These NEMA 14-30 adapters make it possible to charge a Tesla using a clothes dryer-style outlet found in most North American homes. New adapters will be shipped to these customers in the coming weeks and they are being instructed to not use them in the meantime.

The NEMA 10-30 and 6-50 adapters, which have a similar design, will also be replaced as a precautionary measure. Those units will begin being replaced in three months, and until then, Tesla says that are alright to use.

This is Tesla’s fifth largest recall and the first on a single accessory.
