Porsche is Under Investigation for Using a Defeat Device

Nearly 15 months since Volkswagen’s diesel scandal first broke, Porsche is now under investigation for the same issue.

Fortune reports Germany’s Motor Transport Authority, KBA, is investigating whether Porsche also used a defeat device in its vehicles to help them pass emissions tests. KBA said it was examining software to see whether it could measure the angle of a car’s steering wheel, which would aid the vehicle in detecting whether it was undergoing a laboratory test or on real roads. If it was being tested, then the vehicle would switch to a less polluting emissions pattern compared to what occurs under normal driving conditions.

The KBA is conducting a similar investigation into Audi, which supplies diesel engines to Porsche (the companies all fall under the Volkswagen Group umbrella). The German automaker has replied saying that steering wheel movements are not used to detect whether a car was undergoing an emissions test and it is fully cooperating with the KBA.
