Would You Buy a VW Tanoak if it Cost Less than a Ridgeline?

Volkswagen showed up at Monterey Car Week this year with the Tanoak and the Atlas Cross Sport in toe to show rich people and journalists alike what it was up to. It didn’t really feel like VW was playing to type, honestly, especially since they were floating information about how cheap those vehicles will be.

The first tidbit VW gave journalists was that (if it happens) the Tanoak would go up against the Ridgeline, which makes sense. Both are unibody pickups aimed at middle class hobbyists who don’t believe themselves to be contractors or big rig drivers.

The really interesting bit, though, is that VW would be looking to undercut the Honda, by making the Tanoak “more affordable” than the Ridgeline, according to Automobile.

The next piece of interest was that the Atlas Cross Sport—which, remember, VW has confirmed will come fruition—will be cheaper than the long-roof Atlas.

That’s noteworthy because most carmakers charge more for coupe SUVs. The reasoning, I suppose, being that if you can afford to buy something less practical, but more stylish, then you must be willing to pay a little bit more, too.

But there’s less utility, so VW will charge less, which it hopes will help boost Atlas sales even further. That’ll be a big deal, seeing as how VW’s monthly sales figures are increasingly dominated by the Atlas and the Tiguan.
