2015 Volvo XC90 Has “No Second Chance” Says CEO
Volvo is putting all of its eggs into one basket.
The upcoming 2015 Volvo XC90 is not just a redesigned vehicle, it is the first example from the new redesigned Volvo lineup. That is why it cannot fail, according to Volvo CEO Hakan Samuelsson. “There is no second chance, of course. This has to work. We’re confident it will,” said Samuelsson.
This is the first vehicle to be fully engineered from the ground up since Volvo came under the ownership of Chinese company Zhejian Geely Holding Group. It sits on a brand-new platform, and is also the first modern Volvo to be built with zero parts from former owner Ford Motor Co. “This car is Geely and Volvo’s first shot after the merger so it has to be loud and heard widely,” said Han Weiqi, an analyst with CSC International Holdings.

Volvo wants to compete with BMW, Audi and Mercedes, and is investing $11 billion into a new project that will see a range of models based on the same modular architecture, powered by a range of electrified powertrains. A range of luxury features will also help Volvo compete, like a crystal gear-shift lever and a new infotainment system that is compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
New safety technology is also a priority for Volvo, with the XC90 coming with a 360-degree camera, auto parking systems, lane keep assist and more.
