Average Gas Price Dips to $3 Per Gallon

The average price for a gallon of gasoline in the U.S. is the lowest today that it has been in almost four years.

Gas prices dipped to an average of $3 per gallon today marking their lowest price since December, 2010, according to GasBuddy.com. Average fuel prices in the U.S. have been trending down since July when the average price was roughly $3.68 per gallon.

Pickup trucks and crossovers are enjoying strong demand in the U.S. in the midst of a surging new car market. Meanwhile, demand for hybrids and electric cars are stalling with a 3.6 percent market share through August compared to 3.7 percent last year.

Year-to-date, SUV sales in the U.S. are up by 15.7 percent according to GoodCarBadCar.com, and pickup truck sales are up 18.5 percent.
