Mercedes, VW Wary of Google’s Access to In-Car Data
Both Volkswagen and Mercedes-Benz are calling on the auto industry to be cautious about letting Google have full access to their car’s data.
Both companies have stated their own intentions of developing a separate data platform to avoid giving up sensitive customer information to Google. “We seek connection to Google’s data systems but we still want to be the masters of our own cars,” said VW Group CEO Martin Winterkorn. “Potential conflict arises around making data available.”

Both Google and Apple now offer in-car systems with Android Auto and Car Play and many automakers have already signed on to use the technology to better sever customers. Google also recently unveiled its driverless car concept, which will put the tech giant in direct competition with the auto industry if it comes to market.
“Google tries to accompany people throughout their day, to generate data and then use that data for economic gain,” said Daimler CEO Dieter Zetsche. “It’s at that point where a conflict with Google seems pre-programmed. That’s where we need to negotiate.”
