2013 Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG Debuts at New York Auto Show

Rich with power and style, the 2012 Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG debuted at the New York Auto Show today in typical Benz fashion.

Despite the industry trend toward smaller engines, the German automaker will stand true to the car’s aggressive, big engine heritage. It did so by keeping the same 6.0-liter V12 engine passionately pounding under the hood with twin turbocharges spurring it on like a cocaine-fueled carriage driver.

Just because the 45-unit limited-production roadster runs the same engine as previous generations, you shouldn’t assume it went without improvement. AMG’s engineers managed to muster more horsepower, bringing the 2013 model up 17 hp for a total 621. The boys managed that by adding new manifolds, waste gate channels, and an optimized catalytic converter.

That extra power will be all-the-more enjoyable thanks to an all-aluminum frame that drops 254 lbs, helping the car from 0-60 mph in just 3.9 seconds.

Truth be told, the V12 isn’t terribly more powerful than the SL63 AMG’s V8, something Mercedes-AMG CEO Ola Kallenius adressed.

“Simply put, the V12 is not primarily about more muscles. Instead our V12 customers’ demand goes towards even more exclusiveness and refined driving culture.”

Fuel consumption will also shrink 17 percent according to , especially on long trips thanks to Mercedes’ improved AMG Speedshift Plus seven-speed transmission. Previous generations suffered poorer mileage from a five-speed automatic, which was the only equipment able to handle the monstrous 738 lb-ft of torque.

As you might expect, the interior is rampant with carbon fiber and sports expected luxury features like Mercedes’ signature airscarf to keep your neck warm with the top down.
