Mazda MX-5 Yusho Concept is 237-HP of Supercharged Fun

Rumors have been flying on what will power the next-generation Mazda MX-5, and while the use of a turbo seems to be the front runner, the Japanese automaker might throw a curveball with a supercharged engine.

Though it’s not much to base it off of, Mazda has just revealed a supercharged concept version of its current-generation MX-5 called the Yusho Concept. Under the hood is the model’s standard 2.0-liter, four-cylinder that has been force induced with a supercharger. The engine was also built by Cosworth to help the powerplant achieve 237-hp and 202 lb-ft of torque. That’s an impressive increase over the factory’s paltry 70-hp and 62 lb-ft of torque figures out of the standard model.

The Yusho Concept also sports plenty of carbon fiber accessories and interior upgrades such as Recaro bucket seats, an Alcantara-wrapped steering wheel, and suede trim pieces on the dash. It rolls on 17-inch wheels and the exterior gets a matte white paint job.

No real world on what Mazda is trying to show off with its Yusho Concept, but perhaps it’s a sign of things to come from the Japanese automaker looking to make the MX-5 fun to drive, yet again.
