2013 Chevrolet Malibu 2.5L Estimated Fuel Figures at 22/34 MPG

Perhaps a little disappointing for those who had their eyes on the 2013 Chevrolet Malibu, GM is estimating that its entry-level 2.5-liter model will get an EPA rated 22-mpg city, 34-mpg highway.

While not confirmed by the EPA, the numbers fall well short of the base Nissan Altima, which is rated at a class leading 27-mpg city and 38-mpg highway. The new ‘Bu is also behind the base Toyota Camry which is ranked at 25-mpg city and 35-mpg highway.

Importantly, however, the new Malibu should come out on top when paired up against the upcoming 2013 Ford Fusion, which in base trim is estimated to get 22/33 mpg. Ford will offer a 1.6-liter EcoBoost Fusion as well, which is expected to achieve 26/37 mpg, though at a price premium. And while that is right on par with the higher-mpg Malibu Eco model which is rated at 25/37 mpg, Ford will also offer a full hybrid capable of an estimated 44/47 mpg.
