2013 North American Car and Truck of the Year Long List Released
The North American Car and Truck of the year awards (NACTOY) are highly coveted by automakers, and the long-list for 2013 has just been released.
Between the U.S. and Canada, 50 journalists come together to vote and shorten the list over the next six months leading up the the Detroit Auto Show, where the winner will be announced. This is the 20th anniversary of the NACTOY awards.
This years list includes 45 vehicles, with 30 in the car category, and 15 in the truck/utility vehicle category.
The cars range in price from affordable, such as the Dodge Dart and Nissan Sentra, all the way up to expensive sports cars like the SRT Viper. There are five dedicated all-electric or hybrid vehicles on the list, one of which comes from first time entrant Tesla. The midsize sedan segment is also packed with stiff competition this year, with the Chevy Malibu, Ford Fusion, Honda Accord and Nissan Altima all in contention. The 2012 car of the year was the Hyundai Elantra.
The 2012 truck of the year was the Range Rover Evoque, cementing the newest trend in the utility-truck category, the crossover. There are only two classic body on frame ‘trucks’ on the list this year, the RAM 1500 and the Mercedes G-Class.
