Chrysler Issues TSB for Jeep Death Wobble

Jeep has released a technical service bulletin (TSB) which deals with severe vibrations in the front axle of 2005 to 2010 model year Jeep Wranglers, dubbed the “death wobble” by two members of Congress.

The TSB has been distributed to Jeep dealers, NHTSA, and posted on numerous online forums so that owners of affected Wranglers can get access to the information. Chrysler recommends that affected owners bring their vehicles into Jeep dealerships to have the issue inspected.

The bulletin cites aftermarket parts as the most common cause of the wobble. It also reminds Jeep owners to constantly check and maintain the front axle, as well as the steering system, as damaged or unmaintained parts can also lead to the death wobble. The death wobble most often occurs as speeds over 45 mph, and when the vehicle is on uneven surfaces.

Rep. Anna Eshoo and Rep. Henry Waxman demanded a fix from Chrysler earlier this year, and now are praising the company for finally addressing the problem. “Anyone who has experienced ‘wobble’ has been legitimately frightened for their safety,” Eshoo said in a statement. “Chrysler’s decision to issue an official method of repair for this problem is the right thing to do for its customers and for the safety of others on the road.”

Despite the “death wobble” moniker, no deaths have been reported as a result of these issues.
