2014 Ford Transit Unveiled with EcoBoost, Diesel Options

Ford just revealed the all new 2014 Transit, a full-size cargo van that will compete with the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter.

There will be three engine options available for the transit: the 3.5-liter EcoBoost found in the F-150, a new 3.2-liter diesel engine rated around 197 hp and 347 lb-ft. of torque and a 3.7-liter V6 that will be flex fuel capable, and offer a CNG prep kit. Ford claims that all three engine options will achieve best in class fuel economy.

Four different levels of Transit will be offered, a 150, 250, 350 and 350HD, all of which will be 25 percent more efficient and haul at least 300 pounds more than today’s E-Series. Eventually, the new Transit will replace the E-Series, although there will be production overlap for a period of time. Each different designation will get different GVWR ratings, and different tow ratings, much like the F-Series trucks.

A six-speed transmission sourced from the F-150 will send power to the rear wheels, but Ford’s execs also suggested that an all-wheel drive version will be available soon.

The Transit will be offered with two different wheelbases, either 129-inches or 147-inches, and three different roof heights. When equipped with the highest roof and longest wheelbase, the Transit will double its cargo volume compared to the smallest model.

For the interior, easy upfit of racks, bins, shelving and other cargo storage is available for the rear, and up front there will be 6.5-inch touch screen display equipped with MyFordTouch.

The 2014 Ford Transit production will start at the end of next year.
