BMW 7 Series May Drop V12 Engine Option

With stricter emission regulations worldwide, BMW is considering giving its V12 powerplant the axe on its sixth-generation 7-Series sedan.

The next-generation 7-Series is set to hit the market in 2016 and according to BMW Australia product and pricing manager Christoph Priemel, a V12 is not a certainty. The 12-cylinder powerplant has been part of the flagship sedan’s lineup since its second-generation model which debuted back in 1987.

A final decision has not been made on the inclusion of a V12, but recent sales data shows that 7-Series buyers have no problems getting the more fuel efficient 750 models that are less powerful, but cheaper. Currently, the 760Li is the only model in the 7-Series line that sports a V12, which is a 6.0-liter, twin-turbocharged engine with 535 hp and 550 lb-ft of torque.

As for the next-generation 7-Series itself, BMW is working on differentiating it from the rest of its lineup and won’t simply be an evolutionary step forward.
