Honda Civic Type R Spied Testing on Nurburgring

Aiming for a front-wheel drive record lap around the Nurburgring, Honda is developing a new Civic Type R, and AutoGuide’s spy photographers snapped some shots of the car testing.

Power plants for the car remain a mystery, though Honda has dropped some sizable hints. First, the brand said that the future Civic Type R would use “technologies developed through Honda’s participation in the World Touring Car Championships (WTCC).” That points towards a 1.6-liter turbocharged, direct-injected engine, which the brand designed specifically for its WTCC cars.

From the photos, a huge spoiler and body kit are both obvious, along with red brake calipers and new wheels.

Honda has already said that the Type R will be a Europe-only car, but there may be hope in sight for North Americans. Rumor has it that Honda has been looking into bringing the Civic hatchback to our shores to better compete with Hyundai Elantra GT, though this move isn’t expected to happen for a few more years, and it does not guarantee that the Type R will come too.
