2014 Jeep Cherokee Production Temporarily Halted

The second shift of workers assigned to build the 2014 Jeep Cherokee in Toledo, Ohio have been temporarily laid off as many 2014 Cherokees have yet to be released to dealers.

Chrysler says that the layoff affects about 500 workers, who will be out of work for about two weeks. “We have been producing vehicles since the end of June and have now built the critical number of vehicles we need to stock dealerships once containment is released,” Chrysler spokeswoman Jodi Tinson told Automotive News. “We will temporarily idle the second shift so as not to put additional strain on our logistics partners to get these vehicles into the hands of customers as quickly and efficiently as possible upon release.”

Chrysler says that it has produced 9,430 Cherokees as of the end of August, but they haven’t released any to dealers yet. A software fix, acording to the company, needs to be performed on every vehicle before they are ready to be sold.

A union official told the Toledo Blade that there is “not a problem with the vehicle,” though previously CEO Sergio Marchionne announced that the Cherokee would be delayed due to a problem with the new nine-speed transmission.
