GM Off-Road SUV Variants Under Consideration
General Motors might offer off-road versions of the next-generation SUVs unveiled earlier this month.
The brand hasn’t settled on a game plan yet for the new Tahoe, Suburban, Yukon and Yukon XL. Past iterations of those trucks came with a Z71 off-road package, but were never strong sellers according to executive chief engineer for GM trucks Jeff Luke.
“We are looking at, for this generation, a more off-road variant,” Luke told Automotive News.
Most utility vehicles sold today use a unibody construction, which is less capable in off-road conditions. Luke said people look at vehicles like the Tahoe and Suburban as more off-road capable than car-based crossovers.
Z71-equipped vehicles came with stronger suspension components, larger wheels and styling touches, but off road versions of the new SUVs will probably build on that further.
Aside from off-road enhancements, the vehicles will also be offered with further upgrades at a later time. Luke promised that GM plans to enhance the vehicles a time goes on, even including changes to the powertrain.
