Volvo Concept Coupe Makes Official Debut at 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show

The Volvo Concept Coupe has made its official public debut at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show today.

Giving a preview of the new design direction for the Swedish automaker, the Concept Coupe is actually the first in a series of three concept cars coming from Volvo. According to the automaker, the three concepts are paving the way for the introduction of the all-new XC90 model next year.

In addition to the Concept Coupe, Volvo also announced the launch of its Drive-E powertrains, the first engines from Volvo’s new 2.0-liter, four-cylinder powertrain family which will launch this fall.

Volvo’s strategy is to use electrification to boost performance of its engines, taking four-cylinder powerplants and moving output into V8 territory. The concept car at the Frankfurt Motor Show features a high-performance gasoline engine paired with an electric motor on the rear axle, giving the Concept Coupe a total system output of 400 horsepower and over 440 lb-ft of torque. At its press conference, Volvo also confirmed that the next-generation XC90 will come with a plug-in hybrid variant at the top of the range.

“The Volvo Concept Coupé show what you can expect from our new architecture: the confident stance, the proportions and the most prominent design signatures,” said Thomas Ingenlath, Senior Vice President Design at Volvo Car Group. “Even though the all-new XC90 is a different type of car, you will recognize the connection instantly.”
