2015 Porsche 911 Targa Set for Detroit Debut
When the Detroit Auto Show comes about next month, expect to see an updated 911 sporting a roof panel, but don’t call it a convertible.
The North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) published a partial list of global unveils, and among the cars named was the new Porsche 911 Targa. We’ve seen a few spy photos of the unique German sports car over the past year posing as a convertible, but this time we’ll get an unobstructed view of the glassy coupe.
In terms of design, the targa will get a large rear-window as well as a roll-bar and vertical air vents on the b-pillar, a design cue borrowed from the original targa in 1967.
A removable targa top allows Porsche to provide an open-air experience, without the compromise of chopping the roof off completely. The removable panel is expected to made out of a lightweight material, likely aluminium. Earlier this year, leaked slides hinted at the possibility of the vehicle using an automatic roof, for better convenience.
The Targa is likely to use a 3.4-liter flat-six engine rated to make 350 horsepower and 288 lb-ft. of torque, while a more expensive Targa S model will sport a 3.6-liter flat-six that puts out 400 horsepower and 324 lb-ft. of torque.
