GM Confirms 10-Spd Transmission as Part of $1.3B Investment

GM is pumping $1.3 billion into five different US manufacturing plants to support a new 10-speed automatic transmission along with a new V6 engine and an existing six-speed auto box. 

It was already known that GM was working on a nine or ten-speed transmissions in collaboration with Ford, though now the company has confirmed that the gearbox will include ten cogs. Which product the ten-speed will show up in is still unknown, though the General’s trucks and SUVs seems a logical place to start.

The investment will be spread between three plants in Michigan located in Detroit, Flint and Romulus, one plant in Bedford, Indiana and a final plant in Toledo, Ohio. GM says that the investment will “create or retain about 1,000 jobs,” and will also support a new paint shop and logistics optimization center.
