2015 Ford F-150 Sheds 700 Lbs., Gains New 2.7L Engine

Ford has revealed the all-new 2015 F-150 boasting that it’s the toughest, smartest and most capable F-150 yet.

Built on a high-strength steel frame, the 2015 Ford F-150 features a high-strength aluminum body that helps make it up to 700 lbs lighter than its predecessor. But with the heavy use of aluminum, the American automaker wanted to ensure F-150 buyers that its newest pickup is stronger than ever. According to Ford, the new F-150 has undergone over 10-million miles of testing and it even participated in the Baja 1000 heavily disguised, completing all 883 grueling miles.

Four engines will be available for the 2015 F-150 including a new 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6 that is joining the lineup. Other powerplants include the 3.5-liter V6, 3.5-liter EcoBoost and a 5.0-liter V8. Though technical specifications on the 2.7-liter EcoBoost were not yet announced, Ford did claim that it is designed “to deliver the same power as some mid-range V8s.” When equipped with the new 2.7-liter, the truck should be good for around 8,000 lbs of towing capacity.

Plenty of new features also join America’s best-selling pickup including a 360-degree camera view, integrated loading ramps, LED headlights and tail lights, trailer hitch assist, a remote tailgate and a next-generation tailgate step. Inside, the F-150 boasts an eight-inch LCD productivity screen in the instrument panel while safety has been enhanced with second-row inflatable safety belts.

Ford has also confirmed that the new F-150 will fully conform to the SAE J2807 towing standard, which means that you can expect Ram and Chevrolet to follow suit with their half-ton pickups soon.

The 2015 Ford F-150 will go on sale late this year. Look for more information when it makes its official debut at the 2014 Detroit Auto Show.
