AMG Might Use Turbo Four Cylinder in Larger Sedans

There was a time when four-cylinder engines were strictly known for fuel efficiency. Not anymore.

AMG and other automakers are pairing four-cylinder powerplants with new twin-scroll turbochargers in the name of both fuel efficiency and high output. In AMG’s case, its potent turbo-four engine packs 355 hp and 332 lb-ft of torque in the CLA45 AMG, A45 AMG and GLA45 AMG, making it the most powerful production four-cylinder engine (at least for now). But those models might not be the only ones in AMG’s lineup to source power from a heavily boosted four-banger.

According to What Car? AMG boss Tobias Moers said the brand is considering using the engine in various other models, including the brand’s popular midsized sedans. Which means there might be a C45 AMG or E45 AMG in the future.

Moers also said AMG still isn’t planning to develop a performance-oriented diesel powerplant. However, hybrids are another story. With Mercedes-Benz‘s success in Formula One with a V6 hybrid powertrain, the brand is thinking of offering the technology in road cars.
