Ford C-Max MPG Downgrade Hurts Sales
Real-world fuel economy versus what the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) claims a vehicle should get is a point of contention for buyers, and now it seems it is hurting sales for one American Automaker.
In August of 2013, Ford dropped the official fuel economy rating on the 2013 C-Max Hybrid from 47 mpg combined to 43 mpg combined after receiving customer complaints and lawsuits, and ever since the vehicle has seen a dip in sales.
From January to August of 2013, the C-Max exceeded or came very close to cracking the 3,000 sales mark every single month. Since the downgrade, the car hasn’t climbed above the 3,000 mark a single time.

“We’re definitely seeing consideration on C-Max decline over time,” said Ford’s President of the Americas, Joe Hinrichs. “We need to reinvest in the product because it’s a great car.”
The first three months of 2013 yielded 9677 sales for the C-Max, while the first three months of 2014 saw just 5565 units sold. That means sales have dropped by 42.5 percent year over year through the first three months of 2014.
