Volkswagen Golf R 400 Confirmed for Production

The Volkswagen Golf lineup is about to become considerably more exciting with the addition of a model with 395 hp.

Making its debut at the 2014 Beijing Motor Show, the Volkswagen Golf R 400 (for 400 metric horsepower) will be built according to Volkswagen research and development chief Heinz-Jakob Neusser. Under the hood of the hot hatch is a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine churning out 395 hp, allowing it to sprint from 0-62 mph (100 km.h) in 3.9 seconds. What’s even more exciting is that the German automaker will strip Mercedes-Benz and AMG of its claim to having the world’s most powerful production four-cylinder engine (355 hp) with the production of the VW Golf R 400.

Unfortunately, there’s no word on whether or not the Golf R 400 will make it to the U.S. But given how power-hungry American drivers are, it might be advantageous for VW to bring it to North America. It’s also now that VW is turning the tuned EA888 engine to a production unit that the powerplant could be appear in Audi models.
