Dodge Hellcat HEMI V8 Details Revealed

The most powerful V8 ever produced by Dodge is going to fit into the new Challenger SRT Hellcat, a few more details on which have been released by the brand. 

The supercharged 6.2-liter V8 is going to make more than 600 hp, and will be hooked up to either a six-speed manual or an eight-speed automatic. A unique water jacket to help with cooling and a forged-steel crankshaft that can withstand firing pressures up to 1,595 psi are just two of the things that set this motor apart, and Chrysler says it shares just 9 percent of its components with Dodge’s 6.4-liter V8.

High-strength, forged-alloy pistons are also used in the motor hooked up to powder-forged connecting rods with high load-capacity bushings and diamond-like carbon-coated piston pins. High strength materials continue with the heat-treated aluminum-alloy cylinder heads.

When it comes to the supercharger, it is a twin-screw setup that has a drive ratio of 2.36:1 and a maximum speed of 14,600 rpm. Boost pressure goes to maximum of 11.6 psi from the 2.4-liter blower that uses integral charge coolers and an integrated electronic bypass. Also unique on this car is an exclusive air inlet port built into the driver-side parking lamp that feeds air directly to the air box.

For the fuel system, an in-tank pump that accommodates variable pressures is used along with half-inch fuel lines and eight high-flow injectors. All said, if the engine is pinned at full power it will use up all the gas in its 18.5-gallon tank in just 13 minutes.

Power is sent to the rear-wheels of the car, where an asymmetric limited-slip differential is found. It allows for unique bias-ratio tuning specifically for the race track to allow smooth power delivery for maximum acceleration. The 230-mm rear axle is made from lightweight materials and used new cooling fins, low-viscosity fluid and specially designed bearing to help improve efficiency.

Getting the power to the road are P275/40ZR20 Pirelli P Zero Nero tires wrapped around 20 x 9.5-inch, lightweight forged-aluminum wheels with a matte black finish. Brakes in the front use 15.4-inch Brembo two piece rotors with a six-piston caliper.

Also to help on the racetrack, a full aerodynamic kit is used on this car that includes a new front fascia with a splitter along with a larger rear spoiler. Supercharged badges set this car apart from lesser Challengers and complete the look.
