Honda will reportedly bring to market a spiritual successor to the S2000.

The mid-level sports car is part of a three car plan reports AutoExpress and will sit below the upcoming NSX halo model and an entry-level S660 model. All three models will feature a mid-engine layout.

A coupe, rather than a roadster, the reborn S2000 will supposedly make use of both turbocharging and hybrid technology in order to deliver both fuel economy and real performance.

The engine will be donated from the upcoming Civic Type-R, which will utilize a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder and deliver make at least 280 hp. It’s believed that engine output could be increased to up to 350 hp for the new S2000.

Reportedly, it will also make use of hybrid technology developed in conjunction with the McLaren F1 team through some sort of all-wheel drive system – though AutoGuide has reported in the past that McLaren doesn’t foresee its hybrid technology being used on anything other than the million-dollar P1.

The latest rumor of an S2000 successor, even if this report of a mid-engined, AWD, turbocharged hybrid coupe does prove to be true, it’s hard to see how it would have anything in common with the naturally aspirated rear-wheel drive roadster the brand discontinued in 2009.
