Hyundai Genesis Coupe 2.0T Officially Axed

In a surprising product move, Hyundai has announced it is dropping the 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder engine option from the Genesis Coupe, leaving the car with a sole engine choice.

Hyundai spokesman Derek Joyce confirmed that the turbo would be disappearing for the 2015 model year, leaving the car with a 348-hp 3.8-liter V6 as its only option. Pricing and packaging will also be reworked to make sure that the Genesis Coupe still has a competitive base price, though this move is a bid to move the car further up market says Joyce.

Currently, the 2.0-liter turbo model starts at $27,245, while a V-6 models starts at $30,245. This move is “going to allow us to reposition the coupe with a more premium performance buyer,” said Joyce.

Currently, about half of all Genesis Coupe models sold are equipped with the small turbo engine, though overall sales have been struggling a bit lately, down 30 percent in the first four months of 2014.

An all-new Genesis Coupe is expected to debut sometime in 2015 as a 2016 model year.
