Audi Adding Hybrid Variants to all Key Models by 2020
Already proficient with its diesel offerings, Audi will be turning its attention to hybrid powertrains.
The German automaker plans to offer a plug-in hybrid variant for each of its key models by 2020 and the company has decided to prioritize plug-in hybrids over other forms of alternative powertrains because “they meet all of our customers’ expectations,” according to Audi research and development head Ulrich Hackenberg. Hackenberg also revealed that Audi is working on two plug-in hybrid powertrain families and future models developed on the MQB platform will be offered with plug-in hybrid variants just like the A3 model.

In the Audi A3 e-tron, a 1.4-liter TFSI engine is paired with an electric motor to provide a total system output of 204 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque with an all-electric range of 31 miles. As for larger Audi models that will be built on the new MLB-Evo platform that features longitudinal engines, a similar hybrid system could be incorporated with the electric motor mounted between the engine and gearbox. Quattro variants of plug-in hybrids are also possible noted Hackenberg by utilizing either a mechanically or electrically-driven rear axle.
