Cadillac Hints at New Nomenclature with Nameplate Requests
Cadillac might be preparing to revamp its nomenclature with new nameplates.
Recently, the American automaker filed to trademark the names “CT5” and “CT6” for “Motor land vehicles, Namely, automobiles, sport utility vehicles, trucks, vans, engines therefore and structural parts thereof.” The filings came on Monday, July 21.

At this year’s Geneva Motor Show, Cadillac’s marketing chief Uwe Ellinghaus expressed his concern with Cadillac nameplates, saying that the brand “might lose customers who simply do not know where the car fits.” Coincidentally, former Infiniti President Johan de Nysschen has taken over at Cadillac and de Nysschen spearheaded Infiniti’s recent nomenclature change, for better or worse. With the rate that Cadillac plans to expand its model lineup, it wouldn’t be a stretch that de Nysschen is pushing for a unifying name change across the Cadillac stable.
