Lexus Rejects the Idea of a Sub-$30K Luxury Car

Lexus has dismissed the notion that a luxury car could be priced under $30,000.

Lexus executive vice president Mark Templin believes a vehicle priced under $30,000 wouldn’t be worthy of the Lexus nameplate, stating that in order to “go down and build a car under $30,000” it would be decontented and the automaker would be cutting corners. “To be honest with you, you can’t build a Lexus with the quality, the durability, the reliability, the craftsmanship, the content that we put in a Lexus and sell it profitably under $30,000,” Templin said in an interview with Automotive News.

The not-so-subtle remark is targeted towards the brand’s German rivals that have been moving downmarket with vehicles sporting MSRPs less than $30,000 like the Audi A3 and Mercedes-Benz CLA 250. Currently, the cheapest model Lexus has to offer is the CT 200h, which starts at $32,975 including destination.
