Mercedes GL May Get Ultra-Luxury Maybach Edition

Mercedes GL May Get Ultra-Luxury Maybach Edition

Mercedes-Benz is reviving the Maybach badge for the new S-Class, though it may spread to more vehicles in the Benz lineup.

The brand is planning a Maybach GL SUV according to Motoring.au, which would essentially be an ultra-luxury version of the big seven-seater. The Maybach lineup will be like the brand’s AMG offerings, except instead of going for maximum performance these vehicles will target ultra luxury.

“There is still a good brand image linked to Maybach – so stay tuned to what we plan to do with this brand,” said Mercedes-Benz board member in charge of research and development, Dr Thomas Weber. “Of course we see the luxurious [SUV] segment has huge growing potential, and the answer then is why not [build a Maybach GL]? The question is how fast and how parallel we can go with production for something like this.”

If the GL by Maybach does make it to market, expect it to wear some unique styling compared to the current car and adopt the brand’s best technologies like Magic Ride Control adaptive suspension. The Maybach lineup will allow Mercedes to compete with high-end luxury brands like Bentley and Rolls-Royce, both of which have plans to bring new SUVs to market.
