Mazdaspeed2 Hot Hatch Under Consideration

The third-generation Mazda2 hasn’t been released yet and already there are talks of a hot hatch variant.

The Japanese automaker is already considering a high-performance hatchback version of its new Mazda2 for later on in the car’s lifecycle in order to maintain interest in the model as it ages. The news comes from Mazda’s global sales and marketing general manager Yasuhiro Aoyama, who said in an interview with CarAdvice, “MPS? I want to have that! I am looking forward.” As for what Mazda would ideally be targeting with its hot hatch? The Ford Fiesta ST.

The exec admitted that the model’s chassis would have to be retuned and reinforced in order to become a true hot hatch, but believes it’s fully capable of doing so. Unfortunately a decision on whether or not more MPS models will make it to production is still undecided by Mazda. The all-new Mazda2 launches in Japan this November before heading to the U.S. later next year.
