Cadillac Adding Autopilot Style Cruise Control in 2017

In about two years, certain Cadillac models will communicate with one another and starting in 2017, some will be capable of semi-autonomous driving.

“A tide of innovation has invigorated the global auto industry, and we are taking these giant leaps forward to remain a leader of new technology,” Barra said. “We are not doing this for the sake of the technology itself. We’re doing it because it’s what customers around the world want. Through technology and innovation, we will make driving safer.”

The American automaker has announced that select 2017 model year vehicles will offer advanced “intelligent and connected” vehicle technologies including an advanced driver assist technology called Super Cruise. The company made the announcement at the Intelligent Transport System (ITS) World Congress in Detroit and revealed that the 2017 Cadillac CTS will be equipped with vehicle-to-vehicle communication technology. According to the company, Super Cruise will be the working name for GM’s automated driving technology that will include hands-off lane following, braking and speed control in certain highway conditions.

V2V communication technology will help mitigate traffic collisions while improving traffic congestion by sending and receiving basic safety data such as location, speed and direction of travel between vehicles. It will also warn drivers and can supplement other safety features such as forward collision warning.
