Cadillac ELR Will Live Past First Generation
Cadillac’s high-priced electric car will live past its first generation despite slow sales.
The brand’s new boss is determined to keep the nameplate around, although its future as a coupe is in question. Newly-appointed CEO Johan de Nysschen said “fascinated with the technology and completely convinced of the long term potential” during an interview with Automobile Magazine. The ELR shares its powertrain with the current Chevrolet Volt, which will enter a second generation on a dedicated platform for the 2016 model year.

Earlier this year, a report from Automotive News claimed that the European counterpart to the Chevrolet Volt will be cancelled because of especially poor sales. Things haven ‘t been quite as bad for the ELR, but with 744 units sold through August, it’s been a rocky start for Cadillac’s first entry to the electric car market.
The ELR carries a starting MSRP of $75,995 and was originally pitched as a competitor to the high-profile Tesla Model S sedan.
