Chrysler Investigation Requested by Safety Advocates

Chrysler’s recent recall might just be the start of something bigger.

The Center for Auto Safety (CAS) filed a petition with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) requesting a broader investigation related to the recent 2011 Dodge Durango and Jeep Grand Cherokee recall. The American automaker’s SUVs have been recalled for a relay failure with the vehicles’ Totally Integrated Power Module (TIPM) resulting in a fuel pump failure that could cause the vehicles to not start or stall while moving.

According to CAS attorney Michael Brooks, the safety group has received at least 70 complaints related to the Chrysler TIPM “and there have been hundreds if not thousands of TIPM-related complaints filed with NHTSA.” The group is requesting NHTSA conduct an investigation on the 2007 through 2014 model years suggesting that TIPM issues are more widespread than Chrysler admits.
