Tesla Gigafactory Location Announcement Expected Today

Tesla’s much-anticipated massive battery production facility might have an officially announced location today.

The company and Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval are meant to hold a joint press conference today at 4 p.m. MDT where they are expected to make an announcement about the facility. Local ABC affiliate station KOLO-TV reports that it will be located in the Tahoe Reno Industrial Center. In order to make that possible, 3.5 million cubic yards of earth were moved over the course of four weeks to make way for the pad that the structure will be based on.

Panasonic will be the principal partner in Tesla’s new facility, occupying half of the available space. By 2020, the Gigafactory is expected to be capable of producing battery packs for 500,000 vehicles annually. Those packs will produced almost entirely within the facility where Tesla plans to host “key” suppliers as well as its own battery pack assembly operations. The total cost of the Gigafactory project is roughly $5 billion.
