Carbon Fiber Costs May be Reduced by 90 Percent
Cheaper carbon fiber is on the way thanks to progress made by BMW-backed company.
MAI Carbon Cluster Management GmbH has revealed that it has made progress toward reducing carbon fiber production costs by 90 percent, helping make large-scale manufacturing of cars using the material a reality. In an interview with Automotive News, the materials-development group that has BMW as a partner said that it believes “we’ll see a lot more carbon-fiber use in the next generation of cars.”

There are over 70 companies and entities backing MAI including BMW and Audi as manufacturers worldwide are seeking for ways to reduce carbon fiber costs in order to save weight on their vehicles. Both the BMW i3 and i8 uses carbon fiber for their chassis so it would be a huge benefit to the German automaker if production costs could be cut by as much as 90 percent.
