Volkswagen Passat GTE Charged up for Paris

Volkswagen is rolling out a new plug-in hybrid version of the Passat in Paris.

The Passat GTE gets its motivation from a 1.4-liter turbocharged four-banger that makes 154 hp mated to a 113-hp electric motor. Combined, the system puts out 294 lb-ft of torque. Power is sent through a six-speed dual-clutch transmission. On the NEDC consumption cycle, the GTE is rated at 141 mpg and is good for over 620 miles of range on a full tank of gas and a full charge.

Four different drive modes are available: “EMode”, “Hybrid”, “Battery Charge” and “GTE.” In E-mode it drives on all-electric power, while in hybrid it draws power from both the e-powertrain and the engine. Battery charge mode will juice up the battery while driving, while GTE is a sport mode for the car.

The GTE powertrain makes for a total of nine different drivetrains for the Passat in Europe. It also gets special equipment and style, including a distinct front bumper, a blue line through the grille, C-shaped daytime running lights and 17-inch “Astana” alloy wheels. On the interior, special power meters in the info cluster and blue decorative stitching, GTE specific gear knob with blue stitching and seats covered in “Sevilla” cloth mark this as the PHEV model.
