Scion FR-S Convertible, Turbo Officially Dead

Hopes of a Scion FR-S convertible variant and a more powerful turbo model are officially dead in the water.

In an interview with WardsAuto at the 2014 LA Auto Show, senior vice-president of Scion, Doug Murtha, confirmed the bad news that “the convertible went down swinging” and won’t ever become a production model. The Japanese automaker struggled to find enough other countries or regions besides the U.S. that wanted a convertible and ultimately decided that it would be too much investment for too little return.

The bad news doesn’t stop there for FR-S enthusiasts as Murtha also said that a more powerful, turbocharged version is not in the works and confirmed “that’s not something that’s coming.” To make matters worse, sales of the FR-S have been down 23.2 percent through October to 12,293 units. The only good news is that the first Release Series FR-S has been drawing folks into showrooms, helping bring attention back to the Scion lineup.
