Audi Q7 to Offer Plug-in Hybrid Diesel Powertrain

The Audi Q7 will be the first from the Volkswagen Group to sport a new powertrain.

The SUV will be available with a plug-in hybrid diesel powertrain option that will be offered in Europe and the U.S. according to a recent report. Earlier this year, Audi development chief Ulrich Hackenburg confirmed that the German automaker would be working on a 3.0-liter V6 diesel engine mated to an electric motor, but wouldn’t specify which model would receive the powertrain first.

The new Q7 will debut at the 2015 Detroit Auto Show and will first be offered with standard gasoline and diesel powertrains, with the plug-in hybrid diesel arriving later. It’s no surprise that Audi and the VW Group is investing heavily into diesel technology, given its experience and prowess with the oil burners. The Q7 won’t be the first plug-in hybrid diesel on the market with the Volvo V60 in Europe currently available with a similar setup. It will likely be the first of its kind in the U.S.
