Montana Considering 85-MPH Speed Limit

Montana could be the next state with an 85-MPH speed limit on certain sections of its highways.

According to a recent report, four legislators are drafting separate bills for next year in hopes of raising the daytime speed limit on Montana interstate highways from 75 to 80 MPH, and in one case, 85 MPH. All four legislators, Sens. Scott Sales, R-Bozeman, and Jonathan Windy Boy, D-Box Elder, and Rep. Ken Miller, R-Helmville and Rep.-elect Art Wittich, R-Bozeman, cited neighboring states that have raised their speed limits to 80 MPH as a reason for proposing the same.

Currently, Texas is the only state with an 85-MPH speed limit on a 41-mile stretch of toll road between Austin and San Antonio and officials in Montana are torn whether increasing the speed limit proposes more risk and danger to the roadways. Others are optimistic that raising the speed limit will not only be safe, but embraced by its residents.
