Volvo XC90 Hybrid Makes 400 HP, 472 LB-FT of Torque
Volvo has released details on the upcoming hybrid powertrain for its XC90 SUV.
“The XC90 T8 is a plug-in electric car, hybrid car and high-performance car rolled into one,” said Volvo R&D senior vice president Peter Mertens. “The Drive-E engines already offer highly competitive performance versus the competition. The T8 takes it further into a leading position.”
The plug-in hybrid system that will be powering the XC90 T8 will feature a 2.0-liter four-cylinder Drive-E engine that utilizes both a turbocharger and supercharger that will churn 318 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. When mated to an electric motor, the total system output boosts to 400 hp and 472 lb-ft of torque, allowing the XC90 to accelerate to 62 mph in 5.9 seconds.

According to the Swedish automaker, the management system will automatically switch between gasoline or electric power in order to optimize fuel consumption. The XC90 will feature an eight-speed automatic transmission that has been adapted for the hybrid powertrain while a 34 kW starter motor serves as both generator and engine booster. The battery will provide up to 25 miles of electric-only driving and is regenerated through a two-step braking system.
