2016 Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 Coupe Takes Aim at X6 M

Mercedes just unveiled the GLE63 S tonight ahead of the 2015 Detroit Auto Show.

This is Daimler’s answer to the X6 M from BMW and accordingly, it is powered by a turbocharged 5.5-liter V8 that makes 577 hp at 5,500 RPM and 561 lb-ft of torque from 1,750 to 5,250 RPM. That’s good enough to reach 60 MPH in 4.2 seconds by sending power through Mercedes’ ubiquitous seven-speed automatic transmission to all four wheels with 60 percent of the power distributed to the back.

That gearbox has five settings to offer a wide range of driving dynamics meant to suit slippery conditions, comfortable cruising and more aggressive driving in either sport or sport plus along with a customizable “individual” mode. An “M” button in the cabin switches the car into a manual gear selection mode that relies on paddle shifters behind the steering wheel. Apart from the transmission modes, Mercedes also includes selectable drive modes that affect suspension stiffness, throttle response and how much the vehicle will slide before the traction control interferes.

Like other AMG products, Mercedes offers an optional sport exhaust that makes the exhaust sound louder and lends the engine more room to breathe.

Similarly, the GLE63 S is also available with an air suspension and enhanced suspension components that Mercedes says will lend it significantly enhanced handling over the normal GLE.

All four of the brake rotors, which are all vented and drilled, are larger for the GLE63 S measuring 15.4 inches in the front and 13.6 in the rear.

As you can see, the AMG model also gets significantly more aggressive styling cues like flared fenders and a tougher looking front fascia.

Finally the interior is also upgraded with suede on the steering wheel, carbon fiber panels, sport seats trimmed in Napa leather. The GLE63 S is also equipped with a long list of high-end safety features including adaptive braking, collision alert and a surround view camera.

Mercedes hasn’t announced pricing yet, but dealer delivery is scheduled to begin in August.
