Dealerships Selling Recalled Vehicles: Report

1

Dealerships are reportedly selling recalled vehicles without repairing them first.

According to a recent report by ABC News, a Chevrolet dealership in New Jersey sold a 2014 Chevrolet Silverado with an open recall that hadn’t been repaired. It is against federal law for a dealership to deliver a new vehicle with a potential safety defect if it’s not fixed. The producer that purchased the Silverado reported that the pickup was under General Motors recall #14192 which notes that the vehicle is at risk of rolling away while in neutral. In addition, if the vehicle’s transfer case switches to neutral while the vehicle is in motion, it could lose drive power increasing the risk of a crash.

While Hawthorne Chevrolet wouldn’t comment on the report, the American automaker was aware of it and has discussed the issue with the dealership. GM doesn’t plan on disciplining the dealership and said that the company “has accepted full responsibility for this error.” According to ABC News, this wasn’t a rare occurrence and that Hawthorne Chevrolet isn’t the only dealership that has delivered a vehicle with an open recall. Reportedly, “hundreds” of new cars from various automakers have been sold without their safety recalls fixed.
