Mercedes-AMG GT3 Debuts Race Ready

Mercedes’ latest sports car is ready to hit the race track.

Revealed to the public at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show, the AMG GT3 packs more power and a ton of aerodynamic upgrades compared to the road-going car, not to mention a lighter curb weight.

Unlike the AMG GT’s 4.0-liter turbocharged V8, the GT3 version uses the same naturally aspirated 6.2-liter V8 that powered the previous SLS GT3, hooked up to a six-speed manual transmission. In that car, horsepower was rated at 548, which will likely be near the same for the new GT3. Mercedes chose to forgo the new turbocharged powerplant thanks to the 6.2-liter’s high-revving nature and its proven reliability at the race track.

2015 Geneva Motor Show Coverage

Carbon fiber makes up almost the entire car, from the side skirts to the seat pan and roll cage. Of course, the interior is stripped out, with only the essentials left behind; those being a steering wheel, telematics read out and carbon fiber racing bucket.

Pricing for the car will likely be nearly double the cost of the AMG GT, which carries a price tag of around $130,000.
