Next-Gen Honda Civic to Get Turbo Engines

16

Honda is overhauling its entire lineup to include turbocharged engines in the near future.

As the automaker looks to boost fuel economy, even the base-model Honda Civic will turn to a downsized turbocharged engine for its next generation. Honda’s global R&D chief Yoshiharu Yamamoto confirmed the news saying, “Downsized turbocharging will be the base, even for the Civic.” The company has also confirmed plans to start producing the turbo engines in 2015 and the redesigned Civic could make its debut as early as this year.

Expected to power the base-model Civic is a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine although Honda will also offer a naturally-aspirated powerplant as an option. Yamamoto shared that the new base-model engine will be capable of matching the performance of the current 2.0- and 2.4-liter engines while adding more torque and better fuel economy. The company is investing $340 million into its engine plant in Anna, Ohio to produce the turbocharged engines by the end of the year.
