2012 Subaru Impreza Under NHTSA Investigation for Airbag Issue
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has opened an investigation on the Subaru Impreza.
The investigation will focus on a possible issue with the vehicle’s Occupant Detection System, which is used to identify whether the occupant in the passenger seat is full sized or a child. That system is responsible of turning off the airbag deployment if necessary.

NHTSA has received 26 complaints on possible issues with the Occupant Detection System, saying that it was incorrectly turning off the airbag deployment when a full-sized adult was in the front passenger seat. The Japanese automaker had put out a Technical Service Bulletin in May 2012 to address a similar problem.
